2007 began just as the latter half of 2006 ended. From the end of the 2006 WSOP until the middle of May of this past year, I couldn't get anything going. During that nine month span, I was down a small amount of money. This was by far my longest non-winning stretch of my five year "career." The longer it went on, the easier I became frustrated with my "luck." My brother mentioned my poor attitude numerous times, and soon after making an effort to stay positive, I earned my 2nd largest cash ever by placing 3rd for 85K in the biggest Pokerstars Sunday Million of all-time. With the WSOP starting 3 weeks later, this cash was much needed to fund the large outlay I anticipated for the 15-20 events I planned to play. From this I learned the importance of staying positive.
I had high hopes going into the series. However, things couldn't have gone any worse as the series went on. Going into the main event, I had played 16 events. Not only did I never make day 2 of any of these events, I never even cashed. But just like the rest of my year seemed to go, whenever I really needed something good to happen it did. With renewed focus (and help from a corny little video I watched with some guys at Paul's house), I began my deep run in the Main Event. I made it to day 4 before getting knocked out in 306th place for 39K. This didn't quite get me back to even for the trip, but it got me close. It was a relief after what could have easily been a complete nightmare. I learned the importance of bringing focus each and every day if you want to have success (and not just relying on your skills/experience).
Upon returning from Las Vegas, I began a nice stretch playing mainly cash games. This led to my September experiment of trying to reach the top 10 on Pocket 5's rankings. The first half of the month went very well with two 2nd place and one 1st place finish. I soon got burnt out though, and my results obviously went downhill. I ended the month ranked in the 70's and barely made any money, and I couldn't have cared less because I was just happy the month was over (and so was my wife). I learned I am not cut out to be an online tourney degen (thank God). I have no idea how some of these guys do it or why they would even want to.
This led to a sharp and fairly substantial downswing in my bankroll that continued into the WSOP Circuit Event in Indiana. I bricked out of the six prelim events I played there. Once again, the main event went well as I final tabled it. My 6th place finish almost erased all of my previous month's losses. This was my only live final table of the year after having 5 the year before. Although, I did have an 11th place and two 10th place finishes during the year.
The rest of my year has been quiet and pretty successful. I failed to achieve my year goals with regard to tournaments. However, I exceeded my goals for cash games. Overall, I exceeded my monetary goals for the year. Even though these goals were greatly reduced from previous years due to the uncertainty of the effects of the UIGEA, it is all I can ask for.
My next post will be a statistical summary for the year.
