A bit of satisfaction

Last night, I cashed in the Stud 8 WCOOP event. This was somewhat significant for a couple reasons:

1) It was my fifth cash in the WCOOP (this was my goal for the series). However, with no final tables, I am actually down a little on the series if you don't count my 5% of MasterJ's 2nd place cash.

2) With the cash, I have now cashed in the following games during the last two WCOOP's and FTOPS: No Limit Holdem, No Limit Holdem 6-Handed, Pot Limit Holdem, Pot Limit Omaha 6-Handed, Omaha 8, Stud 8, Stud, and 2 to 7 Triple Draw. I am fairly proud of these finishes because it shows I am a complete poker player.

A lot of modern players are one trick ponies (and occasionally 2). No Limit Holdem is all many players know. It is all they care to know. I think you are missing out on opportunities by not being able to play multiple games. The +EV in these tourneys, if you are good, is ridiculous. So many players give it a shot without any knowledge of the proper way to play (for perspective think back to the beginning of the NLH explosion online and how juicy the games were). Furthermore, the same game day after day can get very dull. As a result, your game can start to suffer. Playing new games adds variety. I wish there were more big tourneys during the year with the variety the WCOOP, FTOPS, and WSOP has. Usually it is NLH all day every day with an occasional token non NLH event thrown in.

Something Daniel Negreanu proposed ealier this year would interest me a ton if done online. He wanted a tourney decathalon of some sort where players would play 10 different forms of poker. Each game would be a tournament in unto itself with payouts. A portion of each players entry fee into each event would go to an overall prize pool for the series. You would earn points based on your finish in each event. I think he had the top 25% or so earning points.

My list of events would probably be these:

1) NLH
2) LH
3) PLO
4) Omaha 8
5) Stud
6) Stud 8
7) Razz
8) 2 to 7 Triple Draw
9) PLH
10) either PLO8 or NLH 6-Handed

I think it would stir up a ton of interest and would be a blast. If it was done on a yearly basis, it could crown a World Online Poker Champion.

Swimming with the Penguins

I may be enduring the coldest stretch of tournament poker in my life. There have been a ton of coolers. My 80/20s seem like 2 to 1 favorites. When I have a guy dominated, they seem like coin flips, and when I have a coin flip, it feels like I am dominated. When I am behind - fahgedaboudit. I only have one or two suckouts when allin in the past few days. I feel like I am playing extremely well however. I keep building up large stacks without risking large portions of my stack. My bluffs are rarely getting called even the dangerous ones, and my value bets are getting paid off. The big pre allins mid-to-late in tourneys are just killing me. Unfortunately they are unavoidable as tourneys get deeper and stacks get shorter. Don't get me wrong, I have definitely made some errors. Yet, I have only regretted a few of my decisions in the last 10 days.

It's a weird feeling when you are extremely confident in your game, and nothing is going your way. I don't think this stretch has affected my decision making. My brother has watched a few of my tourneys, and he thinks I am playing well. In his words, he "would have thrown his computer through a wall" seeing the beats I have been repeatedly taking.

Despite this I cannot help but think a big score is just around the corner. In the immortal words of David Farragut: "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

The Stretch Run

I am taking most of today off after some brutal tourneys early this afternoon. I plan on putting my best effort forward over the next six days. I'm not going to lie; with a family and other responsibilities, the last week or so has been difficult. The WCOOP runs at a very bad time for me (through dinner and bedtime for the kids).

I haven't had a significant cash over the past 10 days, despite being 4 for 15 in the WCOOP. As a result, I have dropped into the mid 40's on the pocket five rankings for the month. That's not bad for the amount of tourneys I have played compared to most of the guys up there, but it is still well short of my target.

This Saturday is the huge 5K Horse event in the WCOOP. I was hoping to put up about half of that myself unless I have a huge score before then. If anyone wants to buy a piece of my action (you'd have 100% of the amount you buy of me), just let me know.

Catch 22

I probably picked a bad month to try for the top ten of Pocket Fives for this sole reason: the WCOOP. I actually thought coming in that the WCOOP would be a good thing for the goal. It is my favorite series of the year online by far, and as a result, my focus is almost solely on it. The events all start at 2 or 3:30 my time. This is the dead time of the day for the other tournaments I was using to try to accumulate points. The peak time begins at 6 and ends at about 10. However, when it gets to that time of day, I am either fairly deep in a WCOOP event (in which case I do not want other tourneys to distract me), or I have been knocked out of the event (in which case I am not in the mood to really play something else). This has meant I have played far fewer events than needed for the past week to have a chance of achieving my goal. I am not upset by this. I would rather do well in the tourneys I do play. However, my goal seems very much of a long shot at this point. Before the WCOOP started, I had risen to around 22nd in the standings, but I have dropped down a lot since then. On a good note, I have cashed in 3 of the 11 WCOOPs so far. My goal was at least 5 for the series (out of a planned 20 or so events).

So that's where I stand. Maybe something will change in the upcoming week, but it won't be my focus on the WCOOP, and that's fine by me.

Congrats MasterJ!

Yesterday MasterJ took down 2nd Place in the WCOOP #7 $215 Limit Holdem. He played fabulous throughout. If it weren't for the big heater in the final 15 minutes by his opponent, I think he would have won.

I have taken it very easy the last couple days (only 4 tourneys). None went my way, but I feel refreshed after a long weekend. The WCOOP O8 is today.

God Is Right - Sunday Should Be A Day Of Rest

Another Sunday, another bum day. 0 for 6. I didn't play great, I didn't play horribly. I'm glad it's over. The week as a whole was up somewhat, so I am fairly pleased.

Today is the ridiculously structured $300 PLO w/ RBs WCOOP. By my guess, the average stack after the RB period will be between 15K and 20K. The blinds to start the 2nd hour...25/50, and with 30 minute levels, this will be unbelievably good.

Updated stats:

110 tourneys
18 cashes (16.4% almost back to the norm)
$26,935 in entry fees
$43,719.53 in cashes (plus $36 on swaps) 62.3% ROI
1271.46 Pocket 5 Pts

Pocket Fives is still missing the data from my Turbo win, so they have me at 1066.92 pts in 38th place. My total would put me in 20th, but I am sure some others may move up also once the stats are corrected.

So close

WCOOP #3 $215 PLO 6-Handed 22nd of 1818
WCOOP #4 $215 2 to 7 25th of 649
2nd chance $215 PLO 6-Handed 17th of 228

In both WCOOPs I was in the top ten with less than 100 left. In yesterday's blog I said I felt good about both of these events. I just wish I could have finished one of them off.

I went very card dead in the PLO for a long stretch after being a large stack for most of the tourney. I still had a large amount of chips relative to the blinds when the bust out hand came up. On a 973 flop I had QT86. The SB pushed allin (he just had AA), I just called with a large stack to act behind me. I thought he might try to squeeze if I did this and I had the perfect reshove stack. He did pot it, I pushed, and he had a monster T998. I still had 4 outs to chop and 12 to win. He a decent redraw if I hit though. 6 on the turn for the chop potential, and a 7 on the river for his boat.

In the 2 to 7, I kept fluctuating between 15K and 40K. I never could break out of this range. I missed a lot of good draws and lost a real big hand with 76532 to 76432 (3rd nut to 2nd nut).

BTW, congrats to Mr. Baggageclaim. He cashed in his first foray into a major PLO tourney yesterday in the WCOOP. If it weren't for a semi bad beat to knock him out, he may have made a deep run. I have been giving him advice lately on how I play PLO tourneys, and he has been dominating in the few SNGs he has played.

WCOOP

The WCOOP started today, and I meant to write this ahead of time but never got around to it. It is by far my favorite online tournament series. The structures are generally well done, and the variety of events offered is 2nd to none (even PL 5-Card Draw and 2 to 7 Triple Draw are on the schedule). There are a total of 23 events, and I plan on playing possibly all of them (even the 5K HORSE if I continue to do well this month). If I do play them all, 5 cashes would be my target. With the deeper structures, it favors the stronger players. In addition, I feel the non-holdem events favor me.

I have a side bet with TheMasterJ33 for most Pocket Five pts earned during the series on any event we both play (should be in the neighborhood of 17-19). The winner gets 10% of the other's main event action. I think I am a slight favorite in this bet based solely on the non-holdem events which the Master admits he is very weak at. However, he has a history of doing very well in deep stack big online events. They seem to get him to play his best. Hopefully, we both kick some @#$@.

Incidently, I got knocked out of both events today: $200 NLH 6-handed and $200 PL 5 Card Draw. In the NLH, I made a couple mistakes that cost me decent chunks, and I also lost an AA vs KK for 5500 when the avg was about 5K. In the 5CD, I never got anything going, and I will be the first to say it has to be my worst game. With that said, I still think I have an edge on the field.

Tomorrow has two events I am really looking forward to: $200 6-Handed PLO and 2 to 7 Triple Draw. My edge in these two events may be as high as any of the events to come. Most of the field in Triple Draw may be clueless with a few experts mixed in. In the PLO, if I can get a big stack, I will be deadly. Winning that first big pot will be crucial. Wish me luck!

Who needs skill...Just Play a Turbo!

Sorry it has been a while for a good update. One of my computer's hard drives went down (again), and all the data for the month was on it. Fortunately, the tech guy was able to get it off of the drive. I have ordered a new computer that should arrive within the month. I probably needed it anyway.

I won the daily $216 crapshoot on Full Tilt today (otherwise known as the Turbo $216). I ran really sick in it (which you have to do b/c it is basically an allin fest). I think my 5 year old daughter could have won it. One hand I did want to show was one of the worst bluffs ever. I say this because I was planning on folding until he screwed the whole thing up.

After an ugly stretch from Sunday thru Tuesday, today got it going again. With today done, here are my updated stats:

89 Tourneys
13 Cashes (14.61% and climbing after a 4 for 14 run)
$21,799 in entry fees
$40,112.93 in cashes (84% and falling - hard to keep this high)
1035.91 Pocket Five pts

Pocket Fives seems to be having some glitches that they know about. The monthly standings are slightly screwed up as a result, but I would be in 22nd place based on todays list.

With an avg of 79.69/cash, this project to 1594 pts. However, I only have 7 scores over 50 pts and 4 over 100 pts. On the top 7, I have around 840 points for an avg of 120/score. Thats puts me right at my target of 2400 pts. It will be hard for me to keep putting up these kind of results with the fairly limited amount of tourneys I play relative to most of the guys at the top of the leaderboard. But.....who knows.

Here is a complete list of my cashes thus far:

9/2 Stars $33 NLH w/ RBs - 11/263 $652.05 40.38 pts
9/2 AB $163 NLH - 22/487 $450 42.86 pts

Further Update

Basically on Sunday, nothing went too well. I cashed in 1 of the 13 events I played for a measly $300 (and like 22 pts). I got close in 2 or 3 events, but nothing worth noting. Monday, continued the trend with an 0 for 6 night. I went fairly deep in 5 of the 6, but couldn't get into the cash. I know this is far from an abnormal streak for tourneys, but at the same time it is frustrating.

Furthermore right after busting out of the last tourney last night, one of my computers froze up. When I tried to reboot, Windows wouldn't load up. I have it getting worked on today by the tech guy my office uses. He seems to think it shouldn't be much of an issue after he repairs some of the files Windows uses to boot, but until it is working and in my hands, I am not too confident (my hard drive went down earlier this year, and I had to get a new one).

I am ranked 42nd on Pocket Fives for the month. The good news is I only have 9 cashes. Many of the guys in front of me have more, but are averaging far less points per cash. Since you can only count 20 cashes, and I certainly will have 20 cashes by the end of the month, average points per cash is the most relevant number. Only 12 of the 41 guys in front of me have a better average.

Is a 30BB push good poker??

In one of the worst displays of poker I have ever seen by most of a final table, I navigated the mine field to get 2nd in the 60K Guarantee $100 NLH on Full Tilt tonight. I got to the final table in 5th place with about 160K, and proceeded to watch huge allin after huge allin. The two chip leaders were routinely going allin for 400K+ on the 6K/12K level. This was even with the other one still to act. They proceeded to get the entire table on tilt it seemed. Pretty soon three or four other guys started open pushing for 200K to 300K. I just sat back looking to pick these idiots off. I was down to 127K when the button open pushed for 220K. I called with AT (almost an instacall on this table), and he showed Q6. I moved to 270K with the win. People kept pushing like crazy while I just threw out my little 2.5x bets. I hung between 200K and 400K and soon just 3 of us were left (me and the original two chipleaders - somehow everytime they got called they had TT or JJ or AK). They both had double me (340K to 700K and 770K). The blinds were 10K/20K, and they continued to open push for 35-40 BBs. I took a stand with A6 after another huge push, and he showed K7. I doubled again. Same guy then min raised from the SB. I called from the BB with Q9. Flop came QT6, and he pushes for 330K into a 90K pot. I instacall. He shows AJ - cya. I took a 1.05mil to 750K lead into heads up play. I'm not sure if I played well or not. Like I said the guy was a nut. Any time he lost a semidecent pot, he would bet huge the next hand (I never woke up with anything). Postflop he loved to bet huge (I never hit a hand). I kept trying to trap him. I knew it would only take one. We played 66 hands, and I never hit anything when a flop was seen. I picked up a few big pairs, and got no action. Towards the end he just kept betting big preflop, and I was literally getting 8 high type hands. On the last hand (12K/24K blinds), he open pushes with me having 550K. I have 44 and decide to play it. This may be questionable, but with him my equity is probably almost 60%. He shows 95 offsuit. He hit a nine on the flop and it was over.

I thought I played the final table really well. I picked my spots amid the missiles being fired every other hand. I picked up just under $9200 for the finish. I had one other deep run with a 13th place finish in FT's $100 NLH w/ RBs. I was only in for $209 and got $732 back. I am now up to more than 760 points. That would put me in 12th place currently, but once they update the stats I will probably be a few spots lower. I can't complain so far. My monthly goal is going about as well as I would have hoped for. It is still a long way to go though.

1 Week Down

I had a successful week with profits, a semi successful week with points, and a below average week in number of cashes.

46 Tourneys
6 Cashes (13%) My historical rate has always been in the 20% neighborhood
$9,852 in Entry Fees
$21,129.83 in Cashes
$11,277.83 in Profits (114% ROI)
535.58 Pocket 5 Points (they have me in 45th place w/ 477.98 - due to some database problems, they are missing Tuesday's Pokerstars results)

My avg score is 89.26 which projects to a monthly score of 1785.27. This is really good, but not good enough for my goal. I will be playing alot this weekend. Hopefully, I can get a couple more deep runs.

Anatomy of the Win

This will be a long blog going through many of the big or interesting hands of the tourney with my thoughts in red.

heyfreddy shows [7h 7d]
If you noticed he had timed out, so I thought his min checkraise was just checknig to see if I was stealing, and I figured if he wasn't making a play I still had the open-ender w/ a back door flush. As it was he may have been angle shooting (and got what he deserved)
Uncalled bet of 55 returned to PiMaster
*** TURN *** [7s 4c 8d] [5s]
*** RIVER *** [7s 4c 8d 5s] [Js]
PiMaster shows a straight, Jack high
heyfreddy shows three of a kind, Sevens
PiMaster wins the pot (7,930) with a straight, Jack high

I then picked up another 1000 on the last hand of the hour on a very passively played flush w/ QQ on an A high four flush board. I ended the first hour at 8965 (over double avg).

NBAplayer wins the pot (7,660) with three of a kind, Sixes
I think he played this very well, I don't know how to think of my play. Did I minimize losses by not doubling him up, or should I have gotten away from this? In any case it knocked me down to 5715 (still a little above avg).

I took a shot on the flop when it checked around. His bet on the river felt like a defensive bet, and even though I did have J's, I didn't like just calling. He could easily have a Q. I decided to make it look like my flush draw hit by raising a smallish amount compared to the pot size. Everything about the hand looked like how I would play a flush. In addition, if he called and was wrong, he would be crippled. That hand took me up to 9825. I ended the 2nd hour at 11275.

I picked up 4K on a strangely played JJ to get to 14685.

The DRY is a very good tricky player, so he could be making this move w/ various hands. Getting 1.6 to 1, I didn't feel this was foldable (and I would still have almost 5K if I lost). As it turned out I was a 49/51 dog.
*** TURN *** [Th 9d Qd] [Ks]
*** RIVER *** [Th 9d Qd Ks] [7d]
THE__D__RY shows two pair, Tens and Nines
PiMaster shows a straight, King high
PiMaster wins the pot (17,554) with a straight, King high
I won the flip, and increased my stack to 22,487 (just outside the top 10 I believe).

I picked up 6K on an A high river bluff with what may have been the best hand anyway, and then another 3K with a RR pre with A9c. I was up to 33K. These two hands were big not only for the 9K I picked up but because they were against the other two big stacks at my table. This allowed me to take control of the table. I ended the third hour at 34942.

I got up to 47K via some steals and a failed stop n go that hit, but I resucked. Then this hand:

Salad and I were both among the chip leaders at this point. Instead of RR pre, I just called out of the BB. I didn't want to create a potential huge pot against the only guy who could bust me. Plus the call had some deceptive value.
*** FLOP *** [6d Jd 8s]
PiMaster checks
saladfingers44 bets 3,950

I was content to check call here. If he has a hand like AK/AQ and hits his few outs, I am not happy but OK with it, but alot of times he might bet at me again drawing very thin.

While I played this very weak, I don't think I could have got anymore out of him, and it minimized my downside if he was slowplaying. I'm not saying this is the perfect way to play this, but it made sense to me against this opponent at this point in the tourney.
*** SHOW DOWN ***
saladfingers44 shows [Qh Ah] a pair of Eights
PiMaster shows [Qd Qc] two pair, Queens and Eights
PiMaster wins the pot (13,900) with two pair, Queens and Eights
I was up to 55K, and took over the chip lead at my table.

I picked up another 10K when I picked off an allin with QQ vs A9 (65K). Some steals near the bubble and another allin for 6K w/ AJs vs KQ (80K). I then lost one small pot, and 13K in a blind battle making a thin call on the river w/ 3rd pair on an AKK63 board not raised pre.

PiMaster wins the pot (72,000) with a straight, Seven high (167K, and in 2nd with around 16 left)

I kept oscillating between 135K and 190K. I would steal a bunch of pots, and then lose a smallish coin flip. I was controling the table at this point, but couldn't get my stack any higher because of the coin flip losses to the very small stacks. I lost about 30K w/ AQ with 10 left. The button had limped (chipleader), the SB went allin. I just called instead of isolating because the button had never limped before that I could remember, and I thought he could be big. In addition, the SB's allin was large enough that I thought he would fold most hands. In any case, he called with 98c and the SB had AKh. The SB tripled up when he flopped the nut flush.

Then one of the two hands of the tourney came up:

2500/5000 Ante 600

Finally a crucial suckout. These had gone against me so many times late in tourneys this year when I had my opponent dominated. I guess I was due (361K). AASugar lost a coin flip soon after and feltgelt was dominated and dropped out (both to the same guy) to get down to 6. I now had company at the top. anjlewis's AQ knocked out zelong's KK - 5 left. Two shortstacks got it allin with A6 vs AJ. The A6 lost to get crippled and was out the next hand - 4 left.

Seat 4: anjlewis (196,196)

I really didn't think he had the flush when he checked the river, but I also thought he was possibly on a queen when he didn't lead at that scary river card. I thought he would lead at that card if he was real weak or if it hit him via the straight or flush. I wanted to make a weak looking bet by putting him allin for 2x the pot size. He actually tanked for a good time before calling. His river check was a very sneaky move, and it definitely suckered me in.

This is the guy who has made many moves during the tourney including that check min raise bluff against my set of queens. Because of this, I really think he is squeezing. It is for about 2/3 of my stack though. I am getting 1.6 to 1. Ultimately I go with my gut.

I don't regret this because I went with my instincts. You aren't going to be right all of the time, but I can live making the wrong call in this situation (not just because I won). It is much better than going against your gut which I have done in the past. When I have gone against my instincts and am wrong, I get very upset with myself (no matter the results).

Suck - resuck. I didn't raise the river because I thought he was either on a move or had me beat. As it turned out, he would have had a tough fold if I did raise with his smaller two pair. I was now up 647K to 481K.

I picked up another 130K with AQ vs KT. He flopped a K and we both checked. He checked a blank turn again. I bet and he just called. The river A came, and I bet small. He called. He misplayed this hand in my opinion. He should have checkraised the turn. I wasn't putting another penny in once he called. So his smooth call was pointless.

After this hand he was left with just 80K. He pushed allin the two hands later with 54, and doubled up against my A8s. Two more hands later he pushed with 87, but this time my AQc held up for the win.

I won my fair share of coin flips, and had a couple 30/70's go my way. This is going to happen if you play enough tourneys. However, it is worth noting I was only allin and covered once w/ the trip Q's, and the guy was drawing dead. I took chances when I had chips I could gamble with, and played cautiously if I felt it was necessary.

For a long time now, the breaks had been going the other way for me. I always believe if I am playing well I only need a couple breaks to win something. It was nice to see things go my way and bring it home.

Finally!

I will give details later today, but I took down Full Tilt's big nightly tourney ($163 NLH 55K guarantee) for 14K. I had two suckouts at the final table (A9 vs QQ, and AQ vs AK), neither for my tourney life. Other than those two hands though I pwned. Heads up I made a huge call that essentially won the tourney.

The Weekend Update

On Saturday, I was only able to play in three early tournaments because of a friends barbecue/birthday. I was the bubble boy in one, ran KK into AA in another, and came close to cashing in the Stars $320. With the way I was playing, I was looking forward to the Sunday tournaments.

Then Sunday came.

To say yesterday was a little frustrating would be an understatement. After going 0 for 3 on Saturday, I was 0 for my first 12 on Sunday. I ran extremely cold in coin flips all day, took a fair amount of bad beats/coolers, and only had two notable suckouts. The sickest tourney of the day was in UB's $530 NLH event. I had been card dead most of the tourney, but kept picking my spots well. We started with 144 players with the top 20 getting paid. With 22 left and the blinds at 300/600, I got AK UTG 7 handed. I raised to 1500 with 9500 behind. The button went allin for 9200 total. I tanked to decide if I wanted to gamble at this point. I really thought it was a coin flip. I decided to go for it because if I won, I would leap into 4th place with 21 left. He flips over AQ, but a Q flopped and I was crippled. Next hand the levels increased to 400/800. The UTG raised to 2K, and it folded around to me and my QT. With 40% of my stack already in this was a must call. He flips over 97c, hits a nine and I am gone. Fortunately, I finished strong with 3 cashes in my last 7 tourneys, and one tournament was my saving grace.

I finished 11th out of 263 in the Stars $33 NLH 6-handed w/ RBs. I was in for a ridiculous $273 in it. I took 2 coolers and one bad beat in the RB period. I only had 6600 after the hour and the average was 10K. I then got real hot consistently getting my money in way ahead. I took the lead at one point, but could get nothing going at the end.

In my first ever tournament at Absolute Poker, I finished 22nd out of 487 in their $163 NLH event. I played this one extremely patient early on. The blinds kept creeping up while my stack stayed fairly steady at the starting count of 5K. I finally got some hands, and doubled up twice in a span of one round with AJ vs A9, and pair vs lower pair. Suddenly, I was in the top 20. I kept getting it in with higher pairs, and they were holding up. I took the chip lead with about 100 left, and I stayed in the top ten until there were about 25 left. I finished a disappointing 22nd after coming over the top of the CO 7 handed with KT in the BB. He made a tough call with AT for almost all of his stack. My push was about 6x his open.

In my last tournament of the day I placed 2nd in the Full Tilt $216 HORSE. There were 121 participants, with plenty of them well known. I was among the chip leaders most of the tournament. Johnny Bax was at my tables most of the way (he finished 8th). Heads up was a complete roller coaster. We played the E, H, and O portions during our heads up battle. The guy honestly wasn't that good, but I found out too late that he couldn't fold a hand. I lost two monsters during the holdem part with AK vs 42 3-bet pre. The board came 882 8 6. I thought my hand was ahead the whole way. Then I lost another monster with AQ vs 44 on a board of K96 8 T. I check raised him on the turn, and he called with his under pair to the board. I didn't follw through on the river because I didn't feel there was a hand he would fold there after the call on the turn. With about 360K chips in play, he got me down to 26K and 50K. Both times I battled back to actually take small leads, but the final bad break spelled my doom. In the O8, I raised w/ A4sJ8h. He called. Flop 864, he CR me. Turned the 5 and he led into me. My hand is marginal both ways at this point but not really foldable heads up. The river brought a 3. I thought this was a good card because I now had the 2nd best low (granted it could easily be chopped). He bet, and I just called. His A227 scooped it. He had hit runner runner straight to cripple me. I know I only had half the pot until then, but we were near even in chips to start the hand. I was gone soon after. I was a little upset, but given the way the day had gone, I was fine to end it strongly.

Here are my stats for the month so far:

22 Tournaments $4227 in entries
3 Cashes for $5942.05
$1715.05 in profit
185.87 Pocket 5 pts

Stars $33 NLH w/ RBs $652.05/40.38 pts
AB $163 NLH $450/42.86 pts
FT $216 HORSE $4840/102.63 pts

Only one significant score in terms of points. To have a good month the other two scores should have to be thrown out. Remember only the top 20 scores count. However for now, I am averaging just under 62 pts/score. This only comes to 1240 points (far short of my goal). However, I am up money, and that's most important ultimately.

The Stretch Run

As September begins, I want to take a look at the division of my beloved St. Louis Cardinals, the behemoth NL Central. Sure no team deserves to make the playoffs, but one will (and who knows they might end up winning the World Series ala St. Louis last year). Who will it be?

Currently, the Cubs lead Milwaukee and St. Louis by 1.5 and 2 games respectively. I am not even going to look at Milwaukee because they have been in a huge tailspin, and I do not see their chances at better than 1 in 10. At one point, they had the best record in the NL. They led the Cards by 10.5 games and I believe the Cubs by 7 or 8 after the all-star break. They blew this huge lead and have been playing awful baseball of late. They are young, inexperienced and playing scared.

Here are the remaining schedules for Chi and StL:

St. Louis___________Chicago

2 vs Cin (62-73)______2 vs Hou (61-74)
4 vs Pit (59-75)______4 vs LAD (70-64)
3 @ Ari (74-60)______3 @ Pit (59-75)
1 @ Chi (68-65)______1 vs STL (65-66)
3 @ Cin (62-73)______3 @ Hou (61-74)
4 vs Chi (68-65)______4 @ StL (65-66)
3 vs Phi (72-62)______3 vs Cin (62-73)
4 vs Hou (61-74)_____ 3 vs Pit (59-75)
3 @ Mil (67-67)______3 @ Flo (58-77)
1 @ NYM (74-60)____ 3 @ Cin (62-73)
3 @ Pit (59-75)______

31 Games__________29 Games

Predicted Record
18-13_____________16-13

I have predicted the Cubs to win by a game given their remaining schedules with a final record of 84-78 (the same amount of wins by St. Louis last year). The Cardinals only have 12 games remaining against winning clubs (and 5 of those are against the Cubs). However, Chicago only has 4 games (all LAD) against a winning club. So while the Cardinals are playing better ball than the Cubs, it is going to be hard to overtake them. St. Louis has 17 home games remaining versus the Cubs 13. This will benefit St. Louis alot especially given 4 of the 5 games against Chicago are in St. Louis. I factored in 3 wins for St. Louis in these 5 games. If they somehow win 4, that would put them 1 up on the Cubs instead of 1 back in my outlook. Needless to say, those 5 games are crucial. I don't think the Cards can lose anymore than 2 of them to have a reasonable chance.

Odds - St. Louis 3 in 10, Chicago 6 in 10. I gave Milwaukee 1 in 10.

The good news for St. Louis fans: I never factored in the historical Cubs losing aura and the winning tradition for St. Louis. See you in October!!!!
